03:08 am: Cooking Question Quickie

I was wondering for those of you who cook, if you know anything about mixers and feel up to sharing.  We need a new one, and I'm wavering over what to buy.  I don't bake enough to bother with a stand mixer, so I'm looking into hand held ones.  The credit cards will be hit hard enough for Christmas, and my budget is limited.  That usually rules out KitchenAid because I so rarely see their products on sale.  My food processor is Cuisinart and it's great, but that doesn't mean they make good mixers...

Sorry, I'm babbling again.

What I'm trying to say is, does anyone have a product or company they can recommend for a good mixer?  Inexpensive is good, but I'd rather stretch my budget if it means it will last for a good while.

Well I have one of those monster KitchenAid stand mixers so I'm not up on hand helds, but my mother seems to get several years out of the dead cheap ones she picks up at Walmart. I'd be surprised if she paid more than $20 for the last one and she's been using it a good five years at least. That's about 34 cents a month at most so I can't say she's got the wrong approach there. I'd have to live until I was 150 to make my stand mixer that cheap per month. :D

When I first started kids cooking (YEARS ago) I bought a handheld at Walmart (Betty Crocker) and it still works perfectly.

Might be worth waiting until after Christmas, if you have time. In NZ, at least, you tend to get a lot of sales starting Boxing Day. Also, once you've norrowed down what you're after, you might consider googling to see if there's any online review things done. I know you can get that sort of thing for computers and the likes, and down here we have the Consumer magazine, which does independent tests on a sample of leading brands for various items (unfortunately, the online service is subscriber only, and the actual mag that I have here is for cameras, a couple of financial things, and car insurance... which probably won't help much!)

Our old Kenwood mixer lasted over 20 years - and the beaters and plastic bowl are still in really good condition - but the hinge rusted and broke, so it stopped working a couple of months ago. The new one looks nicer, but also a bit flimsier, so we'll just have to see how that lasts. Hopefully it's stronger than it looks (although when you think about it, 20 years is a long time for any appliance these days - toaster, electric jug, microwave, oven, fridge... I don't think any of the others are much more than 10 years old). The one thing I really don't like about our new mixer is the metal bowl! *shudders* Have to use the rubber spatula to get mixtures out now, cos I can't stand scraping the bowl with a metal spoon anymore! *g*

Hey NightSeer

You've seemed to have disappeared for over a year. Just curious if your still writing anymore?

I hope that it's nothing more serious then you taking a long break or the more unfortunate news that your muse has abbandoned you.

Best of luck
Nevyn
