[info]dracontia @ 04:58 am: Depends on the species, but usually they're covered in down to start with and then (depending on the life span of the birds' species) one or several juvenile molts before achieving its' adult plumage. their are other patterns that are followed by a few species, Bald eagles for instance never completely molt in one go. You can see some that have feathers that are several different lengths from several different molts. Making classification really damn annoying.
