Movie Quirks

Watching movies with Squall is an interesting experience.

Some people can sit silently through a movie, others make little ‘ooooh’ and ‘awww’ sounds as the movie progresses, and there are those who yell at the screen and characters, warning them or calling them idiots for turning their back on that closet door. I used to think those people were the absolute worst, especially when they came in packs. I know better now.

You see, there are people like Squall, the cynics. You know the types, the ones who sit down to watch a movie but can’t stop themselves from scoffing at every single thing that happens. Yeah, that’s Squall. But without words.

A romantic kiss: a snort and possibly eye rolling. Most guys do that at some point in their lives, but Squall hasn’t grown out of it.

A big explosion where the sound rocks the theater: a little explosive breath of air and glance at Selphie that implies he’s seen her make bigger ones. We all have, but not everyone has her resources.

A monster slaying or killing via sword/gunblade: a raised eyebrow as he watches their footwork and knowing smirk. Yes, Squall, we know you could kill that guy in five seconds flat without breaking a sweat.

A monster slaying or killing via gun/riffle/shotgun: time taken to count the ammo wasted, then a look at Irvine who holds his fingers up to say how many shots it would have taken him.

Anything involving a whip: a pointed look away from Quistis to avoid figuring out what nasty ideas she might be coming up with. Most things in movies aren’t practical, but they still spark some wicked ideas in her devious mind.

A scene involving food, especially during boring movies or scenes with hot dogs: his watch lights up, he marks the time, and the moment Zell’s out of his seat, he checks the time again. I’ll admit this one has more to do with Zell than the movie, but you get the idea.

Maybe I should amend my first statement to say watching a movie with SeeDs is an interesting experience because they all do it to some extent. Squall’s simply the worst, but it’s one of those quirks I love about him. He’s jaded, so very, very jaded, yet he found a way to enjoy the one thing normal I wanted to do. I was hurt the first time they came with us at Squall’s invitation, but I’ve gotten used to it. Sometimes I watch him instead of the movie. The little pieces of his personality I don’t get to see very often come out in the darkness of the theater. They come out in the darkness of our bedroom too, but there isn’t a movie screen there to light up his face for me.

It’s nice. It’s not romantic or sweet or touching, just plain and simple nice. I came into this relationship knowing I’d never get a romantic dinner out unless I made the reservations, and my anniversary gifts would most likely be weapon upgrades instead of flowers and chocolates, so I treasure these few nice moments I do get. They’re precious to me in a way roses never could be.

The credits are rolling now and Squall’s holding out his hand to help me up. I let him, and he lets me curl our fingers together as we walk outside. Zell’s bouncing around, all his pent up energy from sitting still so long coming out in a shadow boxing imitation of the final fight scene, and Quistis and Selphie are laughing. Irvine’s off to go get the van we always use for these trips into town. I lean against Squall, wishing I had thought to bring a jacket. Spring nights in Balamb have a chilly bite to them.

“Can we do this again next month?”

There’s that eye roll of his again, but he gives me a fond look and shrugs. I know that means yes.

“Thank you.”
